Make your mark

"You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you."

Maya Angelou is one of my favorite poets and this poem is truly one to live by. For many years I wanted to be more active in my community. I wanted to help teens and the issues they deal with in todays world. After being raised in an abusive home, being abused in my past relationships, and witnessing my own son become abusive towards his girlfriend, I was determined to help break the cycle. I began researching information and became an advocate to stop dating abuse. I now have the opportunity to reach out to teens who are in abusive relationships, teach them the signs of relationship abuse and advise them to seek help and/or leave their abuser. I speak at many functions, hosted a free concert for teens, and will also have a float in the upcoming Christmas Parade in my city. I truly believe that any goal we set is achievable. Helping teens realize their dreams is one of the greatest gifts and I feel so blessed to be able to help so many see this reality. Thank You Lyte!

Hey Maya Angelou is a personal hero of mine. I remember as a little girl seeing the movie I know why the cage bird sings and to be a child an go through some of the things I admired her courage. I also believe that you are one of the most lyrical female rappers ever. I had the pleasure of opening up one of your concerts in '94 (Chicago Regal Theater).. (I know a long time ago) but I got sick and had to put the mic down. I am blessed that I have picked it up again. I came across your blog by accident but I needed to read that post and let you know that.
