Because the physical world cannot be controlled, it is your responsibility to master your inner world of emotions and thoughts so the choices you make are creative acts of spiritual power. Mastery of your inner world starts with a sense of a personal identity and good egostrength.

Because external power is such a powerful illusion that appears to be more useful than internal power, initially it seems as if successful mastery of the physical world is all that is needed. But as life progresses, issues in relationships regarding power, sex, money and self-esteem start to surface and to develop into mental, emotional, physical and spiritual problems. It isn't until you experience a failure or a loss in a relationship or an illness that you realize power is limited.

It is in these moments when life is completely out of control that surrendering and letting God take over means liberation from the illusion that you have control over your life. Eventually you realize your ego's ethical responsibility is to dialogue with your authentic self in service to meaning, enlargement and depth. Your physical life and spiritual life become one and the same. In other words, having a wonderful life is about the quality of a integrity in which you choose to engage yourself in the world. This will be determined by how willing you are to align your will to the will of GOD.

The process of becoming a whole person is never easy. By developing your internal power, by becoming empowered and taking full responsibility for your choices, you can improve your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual life.

What do you love? What do abhor? I find that when I really take time out to ask myself I sometimes come up with answers I didn't know existed. Often I discover much of what I thought I didn't like or I thought I loved was an indoctrinated thought implanted at much earlier age.

To no fault of their own, when we are children asking a million and one questions, adults shape and mold our view of the world. Sometimes with that power they unknowingly push us towards a belief that is of their own and not a usable fact.

I say use today to shed those beliefs that are not your own. You deserve to only have YOUR baggage in tow, not the belongings of those who have had the pleasure of knowing you.

I've wanted the dessert before I could really be done with the meal. I wanted to know the ending before understanding the beginning and some times I'd anticipate the punch line before all the details of the joke are even told.

So when I type Patience, it's not meant for you, it's meant to remind me. Now if you can use that today, by all means go right ahead. The more I live the more I understand what I like and what I don't and well I must say it's liberating to know the difference. What I do like is silence.

Growing up I was a latch-key kid living as the only child in my household. I always felt the need to have the tv on to keep the apartment from being so damn silent. I wanted to feel like I wasn't alone and adding the noise of a television seem to give me that feeling that I was surrounded by life. If it wasn't the tv then it was the radio but something had to be going or else the mood just wasn't right.

I guess it took a whole lot of unwanted noise throughout my life to understand the true meaning of silence and what it means for one's peace of mind. Now I enjoy every moment of silence I can find as if it were something to be cherished..and it is. I am never bored, with every moment I find something to do,think or write. But in silence is where I find ME waiting patiently to be heard.

Good morning devoted sisters and brothers! I woke this morning with the thought of "what must I need to be happy?" It would be wise for you to work this out for yourself as well, seeing this is your life and you're the only that can demand what you want and need.

What do you need? Of course there are many things you may need if you broke down all the aspects of your life. Relationships, friendships, and work. I'm sure there are needs for your spiritual growth, some need praise & worship to feel closer to the source (GOD). Some need quiet & mediation. All some may need is The Good book and time for prayer.

Whatever it is that you require to be the best you, make sure YOU go after it. It could be a simple but invigorating walk that some may need to get their day kick started and have nature help them get it done. Some require quiet time to project what they would love for their day to amount to. Others need to work out and get that adrenaline flowing while some may yearn for their morning coffee and simple newspaper.

Get what you want and take what you need. No apologies....this life is YOURS!

Club Vice Superbowl wknd

ESPN invited me to play for their Saturday celebration this wknd and I had a great time spinning.

Players in the house included Reggie Bush, Kam Newton and Andre Johnson. I started with beautiful and melodic songs recorded by Neyo, Faith and Robin Thicke. Soon after all the party people arrived I ramped it up to Chris Brown's Yeah 3X and Usher's OMG. Overall is was a great night for playing and I had a good time.

University of Kentucky

Thursday eve I had the pleasure and honor to speak to an auditorium of students who attend the University of Kentucky. I addressed the audience about 7pm and spoke for 45 minutes ending with a cool informative Q&A. I told of my story as a music lover and hip hop icon. I spoke of hardships and adversities all the while instilling how one's thoughts are most important to their destiny. I gave kind words of encouragement and the harsh reality of what it will take to excel in any field of employment.

After wrapping up a great discussion of music, life and dedication to being one's authentic self I spent time with my sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho. We took pictures, ate and had good laughs all in the name of sisters showing love to one another.

I look forward to seeing what those young students will make of their lives. I stressed each moment counts because indeed it does and I'm hopeful they will make the best of every second of their journey.

Jordan partners with Inglewood High

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to represent for Jordan's "Wings" program at Inglewood High. Wings partners with high schools around the country in hopes of not only boosting students attendance but also their morale.

The students who attended learned by being in partnership with Michael Jordan they would receive new desktop computers, graphic programs and a new basketball court, just to name a few of the many things that was soon to come.

Today marks the beginning of Jordan’s WINGS for the Future program, a new effort to motivate and inspire youth within our communities with the pillars of education, sport and creativity in mind. The first school to partner with Jordan for the WINGS program is Inglewood High School in Los Angeles, CA.

For the next six weeks, Jordan employees will make weekly visits to the high school to conduct workshops and take part in special activities. Among the events planned are workshops on graphics and design, an essay contest, and a career day panel with employees from across the brand. We’ll also be helping to refurbish their court and various classrooms, and get the school hooked up with new computers for their design lab.

Inglewood High School gave us a warm welcome today with a pep-rally like atmosphere in the gym. The band was playing, the cheerleaders were performing, and the crowd was buzzing with excited students. Former Inglewood High School students D’Wayne Edwards (Jordan’s Creative Operations Manager) and Lawrence Jackson (professional football player) spoke with the students about how their education helped get them to where they are today. MC Lyte also made a appearance and even dropped a freestyle to begin her speech.

There are definitely big things to come for Inglewood High School, and we’re happy to be there to help. Stay tuned for more updates on the WINGS for the Future program in the coming weeks.

Keep away from the haters and keep the haters away from you. YOU can accomplish any goal. Once you focus and put dedication into whatever it is that needs to get done to bring you closer to the desired outcome.

Often times one may hear something familiar and pounce at the opportunity to say all that they know. Perhaps what one knows is but a mere quarter of the info and interrupting could cause the other to not divulge the entire premise.

Everyone has something to share yet if the person they are willing to share with isn't open to receive with the eagerness to understand, all is a wash.

I chose to include the above mentioned scripture because it holds so true for me and what has allowed me to grow in the entertainment business. This premise alone has shaped my way of thinking and because of it I've defied any box created to stifle the growth of an artist.

When I made the decision that I wanted to be a voice over talent what I didn't want to do was show up thinking I knew it all. I had a step by step plan and I was open and ready to receive.

My eagerness spoke volumes to everyone around me that I chose to share my vision with. Through the process I learned you will not receive help if you do not share what it is you're after with others.

I shared my hopes of becoming a VO talent with a good friend of mine in 1997. He was generous enough to introduce me to his agent at one of the most prestigious voice over agencies. I immediately enrolled in a VO class preparing myself for the moment I would meet the entire agency.

I was completely ready when I signed on with CESD and there was no turning back. Of course I called and acknowledged my dear friend, Malcolm Jamal Warner, for assisting me with my mission.

Farmer's Market

Good morning all!! I'm about to hit the local Farmer's Market and I'm already knowing to some of you this means absolutely nothing..lol..and that's ok. However, to some others the Farmer's Market represents a new lease on life simply because of the fresh fruits and vegetables that are available.

Usually at a Farmer's Market you will find organic fruits of all kinds and the same for green leafy veggies that are all grown locally. Organic meaning the "REAL" food had the opportunity to grow from a natural and fertile soil without the intrusion of pesticides and other creepy things used to kill insects. This natural process must be in place for 10 consecutive years in order for a farmer to claim his crop is in fact "100% ORGANIC".

Anyone who has made the choice to eat organically will tell you the taste is so much more appealing and quite frankly buying lettuce in a sealed bag really seems to defeat the purpose of eating what's good for you.

Although eating organically all of the time may not be financially realistic to some of us, we all can make better choices in what we intake that may actually result in having more energy and a generation that experiences less heart attacks.

Be well and treat your body better this year. You are what you eat is not to be taken lightly!

Focusing on all aspects of commercial music, this unique opportunity provides instruction by industry professionals in an immerse creative environment with cutting edge technology in professional facilities. What's good my lovely ones!! At this present moment I'm on a workout bike with water, my iphone and listening to NYC Power 105 (Arab Money), ready to kick some butt. Now checking out Neyo and Peedie Crack, where is he, definitely tears the head off a mic!!

How do I answer without saying the same ole same ole? It's difficult when the truth is it's a business...PERIOD! So even if a few of us who enjoy something that was, the masses are enjoying what is. Jordan's Bobcat celebration in North Carolina

This weekend I hit Charlotte to spin for Michael Jordan and the entire Bobcat organization. It was indeed a Christmas celebration with Jordan Brand Team players Anthony Hamilton, Lee on the violin and Kjon performing a 35 minute set. At 8:30pm I took over the turntables after DJ Complete rocked the dinner portion of the event.

Definitely a festive mood!!

Lightening in a Bottle

THis past May I attended an outdoor clothing,food and music festival in Irvine, CA. It was called Lightening in a Bottle and it happens annually in different parts of the western region. It was an amazing experience and my first time camping in the rough. The energy was great and there were lots of activities ie, yoga, meditation and seminars.

While there I had the chance to unwind, see some garments from new designers, eat some healthy food, listen to some great music and skip a few rocks in the nearby lake. IT was a great way to spend a quick 4 days and I'd suggest everyone attend at least once in their lifetime.

Folks are putting teams together, organizing groups and gathering friends and family for support and resources. The ongoing problem is what are we making of these resources? What are we doing with pdf files and loose papers filled with notes upon notes describing our grand plan that could change the economy, provide shelter for the homeless or help people own property?

IT’S TIME TO EXECUTE PEOPLE! Pursuing our dreams is the beginning of a world changing domino affect. When you do something you love, you love doing it. It’s that simple! Have you ever received a meaningful greeting card that touched you? Why was it so special? What did it say? Do you keep all your cards or do you throw them away? What makes a greeting card worth keeping?

When you're in the card aisle of a grocery store or even in the Hallmark store itself, how do you choose your greeting cards?

People express themselves in different ways. Some folks carefully choose a greeting card to make sure it says exactly what they want to say. Some buy blank greeting cards to simply have an opportunity to express their feelings in their own words. Maybe they buy the card for the artwork and the gesture.

Greeting cards are given to acknowledge a special someone. Could be a special occasion, a holiday, a Thank You, an Apology, a well wish etc. No matter the occasion a greeting card lets someone know how you're feeling.

The question is, how often do these cards take the place of face to face interaction? How often do people let a piece of printed cardstock take the place of their heart? Would you be willing to read your card to it's recipient if you had to?

It's a great thing that we have so many options when it comes to communication. What's your top choice?

“Ok little shorties, come over here and sit down for a second. Who has ever heard of Aalyiah?”

The kids hands go up and they shout out all different types of answers, “Lil’ Jody says, “my older cousins name is Aaliyah…” Lil’ Kevin says, “No, she’s talking about the famous girl who used to sing.”

I said, “ That’s right Lil’ Kevin, Aaliyah was a very special person and she touched many lives. Would you like me to tell you all a little bit about her?”

The kids shout, ”Yayyyyyyyy!”

“Ok, this is THE AALIYAH STORY”

Once upon a time, there was a girl. No a young Woman., No a woman…. Wait. Ok. She was definitely more than a woman. In any case, her name was Aaliyah Dana Haughton. She had a mother and a father and one brother. As she was growing up she would sing all around the house. She had a dream! When she was a teenager, sometimes she would even bust a loose rap! She had a famous aunt who helped make the journey to the top a little extra smooth! She would visit different record companies and whenever they didn’t feel she was a perfect fit, she would simply try again.

Aaliyah had heart and style. She was known for her baggy pants and midriff tank tops and T-Shirts. She would let her long black tresses hang low and everyone copied her trademark side bang over her eye! Sometimes she would replace her bang with a patch! I really don’t know what to tell ya, Aaliyah was beautiful!

Lil’ Timmy interjected, “ Everyone says my mom is beautiful and they say she looks JUST like Aaliyah.” “Well, nobody looks JUST like someone else Timmy, especially JUST like Aaliyah. I don’t wanna say they don’t resemble each other but…” I didn’t even have to finish; I think Lil Timmy got the picture!

So, Aaliyah was on a rise to stardom. She was talented, pretty, and her dancing was hot like fire! She was compared to the likes of Janet Jackson and it was warranted. But when the press would compare Ciara and Beyonce to her, the fans would say,”u got nerve.”

Aaliyah didn’t care what people said about her and the allegations that she really thought age ain’t nothin but a number when it came to her dating Superstar producer R. Kelly. She always had a very “it’s whatever,” kind of attitude! She’d simply check in with the fans and ask, “are you feelin me” and then tell them that everything’s gonna be alright.

She was born to sing and always focused! Aaliyah was a rare creed who was plucked like a rose and broken in /the game like an eclipse of the sun. It didn’t take her long to become a movie queen and head over to the dark side in a film called Queen of The Dammed. She starred in a few movies where she was able to rock a different beat and she was able to work it out! Her fans stuck around because she was genuine and no matter what she went through she always came back in one piece! There was nothing messed up about Aaliyah. I gotta give it up to her parents because they did a great job with her!

She was also very mature for her age and well beyond her years. Even with love. Aaliyah would ask, ”are you that somebody” and even if she ended up heartbroken from going back and forth with the same guy, she’d always be able to read between the lines and suggest, “we need a resolution.”

Aaliyah would always represent for all the ladies in the house and tell us not to rock the boat no matter how john blaze the guy/girl is and to just hold on until your were at your best! The lyrics to her songs were never forgotten. It was like she was speaking directly to us saying, “don’t worry, I gotcha back.”

Then she would dance her butt off and I would sit in front of the TV with all I need! I’d have my dance clothes on, a glass of water, my 4 page letter that I sent to her fan box each week and a headshot of her that I got from her fan club!

Those were the days when saying I care for you and asking are you feelin’ me wasn’t about putting yourself out there. When saying never no more and I refuse was about self empowerment. Sometimes I would wonder “what if I can be a girl like you and make beats 4 the streets?!?”

When Aaliyah was 22 years old she was on an airplane heading home from a music video shot and the plane crashed. Her life was cut so so short and it left a void in the hearts of us all!

Fellas, maybe in you’re world your girlfriend is hot but did she know Aaliyah. I mean if your girl only knew!!!

She was truly one in a million and I got to give it up to my girl. She’s the one I gave my heart to because she was never giving up. Even though on this side of heaven she’s never comin’ back I always found it amazing that she keeps giving you more and coming out with new songs!

If I could I would go as a man undercover into heaven and look Aaliyah in her eyes and say, I came to give love and I miss you!

Hey ladies and gents, brothers and sisters, workers and slackers, pc'ers and mac'ers!! Just finished up a dj set at the Cobb Galleria in hot a** ATL, all jokes aside. Played a few classics for the Proctor and Gamble sponsored "MY BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL" event.

Several generations of beautiful black, oops I meant African American women (I try to be PC at times but) were in attendance and didn't hesitate hitting the floor to slide to the sounds of Teena Marie and Luther V.

Pampering was the focal point of the gathering and while some of the women sat just listening to the sounds of DJ MC Lyte others stood in line to get their grooming on. Nails, hair, make-up and massages, all for the glorious price of $Free.99, gotta love it.

The next MBIB is in Houston, TX on September 11th and NYC on the 18th. Come out ladies and get your pamper on!!

Exercising Patience

Feels so good to finally be in a space where all that I know, doesn't need to be said. A space where everything I hear, doesn't need to be repeated. A space where I can quickly assess who and what really deserves my attention.

I've learned to ask myself to what degree and at what cost will I allow myself to be pulled away from who I really am at the core? What's worth deviating from my overall plan? What means more than staying focused?
The answer, undoubtedly, NOTHING!

It's taken years for me to put me first but I have finally arrived. But not a day goes by that I don't ask this simple question of myself, "Am I doing for me, what I would so graciously do for another?"

Time to Move

Questions:

What happens when you take a look around and find the person you are trying to be is surrounded by people who far from the greatest company?

Answer:

You move!! You get hauling that ass like a bat out of hell.

Reason:
No one is going to take care of you better than you, so start acting like it! Begin taking the steps immediately that are going to get you to where you want to be. If you expect to win you can't do it running away from the finish line.

I once heard someone say, look at your five closest friends and you're looking at you. If there's something you see that you don't like or doesn't represent the true you, shake dem fools...jokes?...nah "I'm so fa real".

Change is possible but not when all you see is what you're trying not to be. When all you hear is not what you care to internalize. Gossip gets old quick and is just as poisonous to the person listening as it is to the person speaking it. Misery loves a whole lot company.

Look for something different. Read different books, visit different sites and go to different places where you can meet a whole new group of people. Use a different vocabulary from what you are accustomed to and you might find yourself in the midst of new people who are also looking for a new way to be inspired and frankly just a whole new way TO BE.

Bottom line is be courageous and unafraid to MOVE....now GET GONE and make something magical happen!!!

Saying I love you...by accident

Love has such an interpretive meaning behind it. We like to mix it up, don't we? "I love her but I'm not IN love"…or…. "I have a lot of love for him"… or …. "Who wouldn't love her, she's lovable!" It's all so relative and I guess the magic sparks when both parties relate at the same time and in the same way!

Have you ever loved someone and didn't tell them? Were you waiting for them to go first? Were you afraid they didn't feel the same way? I like to wait until it rolls right off my tongue and then I know I mean it. So when the new person I was seeing said it one evening so casually on the way out of my front door, I just figured they were practicing the same philosophy I was. Just waiting until it slipped out and then that would mean it was true! Still, what about if your new honey just got out of an old honey jar? Would you wonder if the "I love you" slipped out because on habit? I did! Was it a real accident? My "I love you" wasn't mine! Or was it?

Sometimes I wonder, how do such loving relationships come to an end? When do things start to change? I think it happens in subtle ways. If we're not paying attention, we'll miss them. Maybe the "I love you" was really an accident but because it was played off as sincere, I began to move from a more confident place. Maybe I was walking with my chest out and head high because I was loved and that security made me step up my game and re- focus. Oh, but if it was all an accident and not sincere, could my actions be looked at as if I was pre- occupied and losing interest? A subtle energy that could switch the direction of something so good.

How do we leave the fear by the wayside and express the truest version of ourselves all in the name of love? When do we start treating each new relationship as brand new and as if our past didn't even exist? Is it possible to only take the lessons of the past, apply them to the future, speak from our hearts and start saying "I LOVE YOU"…. on purpose?

Everyone find out your blood type and then research the food you should and shouldn’t. It’s time to start FEELing better so we can DO better. In most cases all we have to do to start is EAT better. Let’s put good things in our bodies. We can start small and slow. Let’s try to eat five small meals (with healthy snacks) each day and boost our metabolisms! For some, the ultimate goal is to put ONLY living things in their living bodies. That’s sounds so ideal for the future but in the present? I love a good steak! My blood type says I can have that!

What does that even mean anymore in a society where woman are wearing less and less while men are more and more blunt about only wanting one thing? I was listening to a comedy show recently and the male comedian joked about how after a party either he and a young lady are *&$@ing or she's going home. He was CLEAR that there would be NO IHOP, Dennys, Jerrys or anything else! Yeah it was funny but it still got me thinking.

People are so afraid to put themselves out there in the line of love for fear it's a line of fire that they go to extreme measures to prove that they aren't "tricking." Woman seem to be feeling like they have been hurt so many times that they're not willing to "put themselves" out there again. Instead they rebel and dress scantily, speak vulgarly, party more and create more space between themselves and true love.

When do we get back to courageous acts of taking chances and being open for whatever is out there? When do we start treating each experience, love, friendship and each moment like it's new and the first?

Enjoy life, learn from your mistakes. Those times are gone. The past is dead. Live a little… PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE!

Father's Day

So Yesterday was Father's Day! I was thinking of mothers and all their hard work, especially single mothers. I was thinking about all they do and go through. I was even thinking about their pain and stress.

It got me thinking about a fathers pain. What could make a man feel pain as a father? Were there fathers out there who didn't leave their children and were distraught on Father's Day and missing them? Does Father's Day not also remind them of the loneliness they felt last Christmas Day when they weren't able to share it with their kids?

Money cannot replace the look on a child's face when they receive that one toy they wanted all year. Some men would trade a ride in a luxurious sports car to test drive a remote control car with their son. Some men would trade "guy's night out" just to play dolls with their daughters. Some people don't understand the concept of another wanting to hold their child, talk to them and read them a bedtime story.

We are always so quick to tie a man's absence with something he must have done wrong. So quick to assume that he walked out on his family.

Many have good reasons for feeling this way but the reality is, it's not everyone else's experience. Some men really want to be there.

So the next time you see a father without his children, don't assume he ran out on them. The fact is, society has replaced most irresponsible fathers with a monthly payment. To the real fathers trying to keep ties with their kids, keep your head up!

I guess in the middle of the most hectic schedule with performing, deejaying, music supervising, lecturing, learning, studying, appearing, hosting and more, one would think there isn't time for anything else.

Well I'm proof of living a dream I once had many years ago and really any time that I now have is spent thanking God for all that he's made possible. He's given me life and ability and with that I can accomplish any goal that I really focus and put my attention on.

Long live the dream! Now go make it happen.

I remember many years ago an extremely famous friend of mine said to me, "Lyte, never do anything you don't want to do". She believed there were too many people doing lots of things because someone else wanted them to and not because their own wishes.

Now that I'm an adult (fully grown that is) I must agree. Knowing that time goes quickly and you can never get a moment back, I now do only the things I want to. Sure folks can make suggestions and I will gladly listen but it won't always result in me doing as they say.

Truth is no one ever knows you better than you know yourself and ultimately you know what will make you happy and keep you satisfied.

Within this beautiful maze of Hip Hop culture there are many deeply rooted ills, I wonder does anyone notice.

For many years rappers have not only stepped up their game with the admittance of smoking marijuana but they've also advanced with the promotion of the substance in their music. There are a few who couldn't get through a song without talking about getting high if their life depended upon it.

Some believe being high takes away the stress while others think smoking the sticky puts them in a creative mode allowing them to get in touch with some higher level of consciousness.

Although many may smoke in the rap game, many don't.... so don't be fooled.
As an mc entering the game you should know, "SMOKING WEED IS NOT A PREREQUISITE". Don't get hung up trying to be cool and create another problem for yourself. Be YOU. And if you do smoke, challenge yourself and detox. Anything in excess can stand to be put to rest for a while.

Ok, so the CMA's were on tonight. For those totally unaware CMA stands for the Country Music awards and might I add Darius Rucker won for Best New Artist. Probably means nothing to you but this is a long time coming for an African American to win at the Country Music Award.

As of late, with the dying sales of Hip Hop and R&B, I can't help but form a theory as to why the entire music industry isn't suffering. Let's take country into consideration and I believe how country music stays relevant and selling units is because the record labels market cross generationally. It's as simple as that. They aren't as strict with their radio playlist either. The station boasting the hottest in country music will play what's new but will also play older material from veteran country singers, cause guess what? they know it's still HOT. The bottom line is the whole genre pays respect to the foundation. That's what's missing from Hip hop and R&B. We'd be unstoppable if we had a united front.

As far as labels go when marketing Hip Hop and R&B they are truly missing an entire generation or even two. As a matter of fact the old structure of the major record label has got to be one of the most ass-backward systems I've ever seen. They don't want to completely submit to the download and rightfully so for a few reasons.
1. They feel a loyalty to their manufacturers and distributors (with the download neither is necessary). They've formed such a bond that even seeing TOWER records slowly go out of business didn't even make them re think their plan. Labels still paying an outside company to manufacture and distribute to stores that are no longer in existence? Doesn't really make sense at all.
2. Really hard to track sales due to the stealing and swapping of music.

The deal is if the labels some time ago said "we're going to create sites that can actually sell our roster's music", they'd be way further along in the game. Can you imagine Def Jam selling their artist's music only from their site? That would have been bananas!!! Imagine all the money they would have saved. OH but they need the shareholders to give LOTS of money for preparation of a cd release so they must keep all of the things in place to actually justify why they need LOTS of money....lol It's a joke because everything has just gotten too damn expensive. Something like this
1. radio play can cost anywhere from 25k to 300k (to make you believe it's a hit)
2. a super producer's fee (one that guarantees a hit, or at least the label feels so) 100k
3. video production can range 250k to 500k
4. then more and more and more and it's all RIDICULOUS!!!

All of this to create lots of smoke and screens to make someone believe "you can't live with out this song" or somehow "your life would be much better if you bought it"...HA!

The problem comes in to view when they are marketing kiddie Hip Hop in hopes of kids and teens going to a store and buying a cd. Most kids download which means the generation that still would buy a cd from Target or Walmart are being overlooked. There isn't a label willing to spend money marketing adult Hip Hop which is bananas because they are the very ones with the extra cash to do so.

Instead of a true lover of Hip Hop being able to enjoy new music by their favorite artist they have to go to an R&B oldie station or listen to Backspin where they are warped back in to time.

Let's get smart, choose and support the Hip Hop that means something to us.

The building would rattle from the bass of a Pinchez song. Disco and Soft Rock I picked up from mom. R&B I got from my uncle and my mom, groups like Rick James, D-train, The Ojays, Teen Marie and many more. Hip hop came by way of my cousins in Spanish Harlem and that is where I got wind of Kurtis Blow and the Furious Five. I''ve heard "Black People" still find it extremely taboo to fall prey to anit-depressants and all their adverse affects. Well hallelujah for that!!! As Black people we've been oppressed, suppressed and all of it leads to depression. Momentary failures would lead someone to not feel their optimum self. We've encountered everything under the sun and so why would this be a time to start popping pills that may lead to
sleep deprivation,constipation, fatigue, decreased appetite, weight loss, irritability, abnormal dreams, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, decreased sex drive, dizziness, diarrhea, increased sweating,impotence (erectile dysfunction), suicidal thoughts or behavior, anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, hostility or aggressiveness, engaging in unusual or dangerous activities, restlessness or inability to sit still, extreme elation or feeling of happiness that may switch back and forth with a depressed or sad mood, other unusual changes in behavior, confusion or mental changes, a rapid heart rate, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, blood pressure changes, an irregular heart rhythm, overactive reflexes, fever, sweating or shivering, shakiness, seizures, coma, feelings of a rapidly or forcefully d=beating heart (known as heart palpitations), a high fever, easy bruising or bleeding, Low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia), signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
unexplained rash- hives - itching - unexplained swelling - wheezing - difficulty breathing or swallowing -
oh but there's more- yawning, hot flashes, delayed ejaculation, lack or orgasm, nose bleeding, increased LDL cholesterol....

So now with seeing all the side effects to this drug, which I might add most drugs of this nature will have you more tripped out than you were before you started them. You can only imagine what a nasty tasteI had in my mouth as I visited one of the most popular sites geared toward people of color when I saw an advertisement for this drug. Who the hell are they kidding? Do not be fooled, tricked or hoodwinked. And yes I might get flack for this later with haters blogging and such but you'll know it's because I aim to give the truth always. I love my people and never want to see any of you become the victim of a vicious game where when playing with fire all one can do is burn.

Terms like Bipolar, ADD, ADHD all exist for one reason only, and thats to introduce to a drug to a new patient and have them hooked for life.

Is depression caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain?

You’ve seen it in television ads, read it in newspaper articles, maybe even heard it from your doctor: depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain that medication can correct. According to the chemical imbalance theory, low levels of the brain chemical serotonin lead to depression and depression medication works by bringing serotonin levels back to normal. However, the truth is that researchers know very little about how antidepressants work. There is no test that can measure the amount of serotonin in the living brain – no way to even know what a low or normal level of serotonin is, let alone show that depression medication fixes these levels.

While antidepressant drugs such as Prozac increase serotonin levels in the brain, this doesn’t mean that depression is caused by a serotonin shortage. After all, aspirin may cure a headache, but it doesn’t mean that headaches are caused by an aspirin deficiency. Furthermore, many studies contradict the chemical imbalance theory of depression. Experiments have shown that lowering people’s serotonin levels doesn’t always lower mood, nor does it worsen symptoms in people who are already depressed. And while antidepressants raise serotonin levels within hours, it takes weeks before medication kicks in to relieve depression. If depression were due to low serotonin, there wouldn’t be an antidepressant medication lag.

And once you've started....

Antidepressant withdrawal

Once you’ve started taking antidepressants, stopping can be tough; many people have withdrawal symptoms that make it difficult to get off of the medication.

If you decide to stop taking antidepressants, it’s essential to taper off slowly. If you stop abruptly, you may experience a number of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as crying spells, extreme restlessness, dizziness, fatigue, and aches and pains. These withdrawal symptoms are known as antidepressant discontinuation syndrome. Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome is especially common when you stop taking Paxil or Zoloft. However, all medications for depression can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Antidepressant withdrawal symptoms

Anxiety, agitation
Depression, mood swings
Flu-like symptoms
Irritability and aggression
Insomnia, nightmares
Nausea and vomiting
Dizziness, loss of coordination
Stomach cramping and pain
Electric shock sensations
Tremor, muscle spasms

Depression and anxiety are also common symptoms when withdrawing from antidepressants. When depression is a withdrawal symptom, it’s often worse than the original depression that led to drug treatment in the first place. Unfortunately, many people mistake this withdrawal symptom for a return of their depressive illness and resume medication, creating a vicious circle.

In order to avoid antidepressant withdrawal symptoms, never stop your medication “cold turkey.” Instead, gradually taper your dose, allowing for at least 1-2 weeks between each dosage reduction. This tapering process may take up to several months, and should be monitored under a doctor's supervision.

Antidepressants and suicide risk

There is a danger that, in some people, antidepressant treatment will cause an increase, rather than a decrease, in depression. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that all depression medications include a warning label about the increased risk of suicide in children and young adults. The suicide risk is particularly great during the first month to two months of treatment.

Anyone taking antidepressants should be closely watched for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Monitoring is especially important if this is the person’s first time on depression medication or if the dose has recently been changed. Signs that medication is making things worse include anxiety, insomnia, hostility, and extreme agitation—particularly if the symptoms appear suddenly or rapidly deteriorate. If you spot the warning signs in yourself or a loved one, contact your doctor or therapist immediately.

Flavor for Fashion

Once upon a time there lived a small time designer who cut expensive bags up for a living and revamped the fabric to create extremely stylish clothes for extremely eccentric artists. Everyone stood in line and paid big bucks to have their wardrobe sewn before their very eyes. If the outfit called for extravagant measure it could take a while before you could pick your items up. I'm sure if you look back in the hip hop history books you will find many of mcs and djs dressed in this type of gear. Eric B and Rakim for instance wore suits made of black velour, leather and Gucci emblems.

Meet Karl Kani who once played assistant to Harlem's own designer Dapper Dan. Since starting out in the mid 80s Karl has gone on to have many internationally known clothing lines. Most recently he created a line that was disappointingly short lived called LIVE. I was fortunate enough to visit him at his showroom and studio in Los Angeles, CA. I was given a couple of pairs of jeans and about half a dozen t shirts. I love the feel and look of both the jeans and the tshirts however most will never experience the touch of LIVE. I'm not sure what became of LIVE but Karl Kani undoubtedly moved on and is currently working on yet another unforgettable line. When one exude talent and style the way Karl does there's never too much time to sit idle. Kudos to Karl and much success always.

Moments of a lifetime

I met Doug E Fresh sometime after hearing his music. His energy was unforgettable and I was definitely inspired by his style and work ethic. Still he is one of the hardest working men in show biz performing at least 250 days out of the year on stages all over the world. He is truly the world's greatest entertainer!!

What I adore most about my friendship with Doug E is our long talks. If Doug E and I pass one another in a hallway of a hotel before a show it's guaranteed we are both going to be late. It's not often in this biz I can speak to someone so candidly and freely about whatever.

The most memorable moment I have of Doug is him calling me immediately after he had heard me as a guest on a radio show. We were both in the midwest sharing a performance bill with a couple of other artists. He heard the show and called me right away. We talked for moment, catching up and then he asked out of the blue, "Were you upset with anything at the radio station?" and I said, "No, why?". He waited for a second and I could tell I was in for something and he continued, "well if you're happy to do the show let the listeners know." I totally got it, just from those few words. What Doug was saying was to relax and let the listeners in radio land know that I had a personality but most of all that I was happy to be there in their city and that I was going to do my best to give them a great show. From that moment on I dropped the stern Brooklyn hard rock mentality to truly be myself and if that involved being goofy from time to time so be it. I really lightened up and began to gel with the people who were buying my music and supporting my concerts.

I thank Doug for calling me that day because he didn't have to. I thank him for keeping it true and loving me enough to hit me up like a big brother and tell me exactly what he was thinking. He put years on my career by sharing those words with me. That's a village.....

Faith Renée Evans was born June 10, 1973. She is a singer-songwriter, record producer, actress and author. Born in Lakeland, Florida and raised in Newark, New Jersey.

Evans moved to Los Angeles in 1993 for a career in music business. After working as a backing vocalist for Al B. Sure, she became the first female artist to be signed to Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment label in 1994, on which she released three platinum-certified studio albums between the years of 1995 and 2001.

What is stated above is certainly told in her new memoir entitled "Keep the Faith" but then there's so much more. Faith keeps us invested in the read just by keeping it so damn truthful. In this book she lays it out and apologizes for nothing. I personally love her courage and her extreme work ethic that has gotten her to where she is now. Great read.

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee considered our major legislative initiative, The Performance Rights Act. As I've written to you many times before, the bill closes the "corporate radio loophole" and makes terrestrial radio play by the same rules as Internet and satellite radio by compensating the performers of the music they play.

It's been a long road to get here, with many Academy members testifying before Congress, flying to Washington to lobby, and sending literally thousands of emails. Last week, we asked Academy members from the states of key Senators to weigh in with their support. Hundreds of you did, and your voices were heard loud and clear--the Committee voted to APPROVE the measure.

With May's successful House Judiciary vote behind us, today's vote was the final committee action before the bill can be considered by the full Congress. While there is much work left to get final passage, today's historic vote marks the most significant progress on a nearly 80 year quest for performance rights for artists. Congratulations on this important victory and a special thank you to the Recording Academy members who called their Senators in the past week.

I truly believe our ability to change at a moment's notice will determine how successful we can become. When one becomes rigid and afraid of the slightest change is when the downfall is near. It's called being prepared for whatever changes may arise and having ample time to restructure the plan so that it benefits YOU.

As a child I was forced to do many things against my will like having to wear dresses with lots of frills and things, lol. I remember having to eat foods I wasn't fond of like squash, chicken livers and turnips...yuck. NO child should be forced to eat the likes of eggplant, zucchini and avocado!!

In any case I sum it up to this
Many of us hold on to old ways in fear of change and handling circumstances in a new way. We let opportunities slip by because we find it difficult to adjust. I think we do it because for so many years in the past we were told what the changes would be, when we would make them and what would happen if we didn't. Let's not let fear stop us from making the changes necessary to living a fuller life.

Hip Hop Sisters started back in 2006. So, for the past three years I've been "Rockin' Wit' The Best" (Had to get a song quote in). It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with this legendary MC. In business I've had many questions, but it has been difficult to keep the fan in me at bay. I was trying to figure out the best way to ask those "fan" questions I had without looking too corny. So when she said she would grant me an interview for the HHS I jumped at the chance to ask.

AtLas’: You were Lana Moorer long before you were MC Lyte. What is your earliest childhood memory?

MC Lyte: My earliest childhood memory is probably refusing to wear a dress for Easter.
We were going to Playland in Rockaway, Queens with my uncle and he wanted me to wear a dress. He had a real problem that day because he was unsuccessful.

A: Speaking of childhood memories, how did you get the scar on your forearm?
I noticed it at the meet n greet

ML: Detective AtLas’ (lol). A glass window; I thought I could stick my arm through what appeared to be a broken window and I didn't see the broken glass that remained in the frame

A: Do you remember where you were and what you were doing when you first heard yourself on the radio?

ML: Yes. I was delivering packages as a messenger at the Graybar Building and heard it playing in their mailroom

A: I noticed that your early work rarely had a hook, usually lots of scratching or sampling your own voice. Was that intentional?

ML: Paperthin and what else?

A: Lyte as a Rock, 10% Dis…

ML: With Paperthin it was written before I heard the beat. I had a rhyme book and everything from the first album was from that book. So I just sat with the producers and fit the rhymes to some of their tracks. I didn't write hooks then. 10% had a hook. BEAT BITER DOPE STYLE TAKER, TELL YOUR FACE YOU AIN'T NOTHING BUT A FAKER.

A: Oh yeah... I meant cappuccino and Cha, Cha, Cha.

ML: Yeah those were the days when the lyrics meant so much you didn't even need a hook. People wanted the hook to be done so they could hear the lyrics and now it's just the opposite.

A: Do you still have clothes and jewelry from then?

ML: Yes I do. My Nefertiti earrings. My jeans with all the graffiti on them. Lots of leather outfits. I almost got into tax trouble because they didn't believe I spent that much money on leather. Then I went back and took pictures of them all and they released any intentions.
